PFAS Water Test
For Dewey's Plumbing clients only.
Recommended by SimpleLab™ for clients concerned about PFAS/PFOA/PFOS contamination associated with industrial waste and consumer products like GoreTex®, Teflon®, StainMaster® carpets, Scotchgard®, and other flame retardants and non-stick products.
This SimpleLab water test package provides all required materials to properly collect and submit a sample for certified laboratory testing. Reported results will include detailed, quantified analysis of PFAS compounds in drinking water using EPA method 537.1 (or equivalent), measuring to below 2 parts per trillion (PPT).
Testing includes: 14 prevalent PFAS/PFOA/PFOS compounds.
Report analysis includes: Health-risk assessment, potential plumbing and aesthetic issues (taste, odor, appearance), and comparison to any regulatory limits and/or public health guidelines.

What are PFA/PFOS/PFOA?▾
The PFCs (Perfluorinated Chemicals) listed above are manufactured for use in daily products globally. They have been used in the production of Teflon and other plastics. Humans are exposed to PFAS in small quantities through packaging and other plastic products imported from abroad. Most over-exposure results from ingesting contaminated water through irresponsible disposal of wastewater from industries as was the case in Hoosick Falls, NY.
PFOA, also known as C8 (because it has 8 carbons), is classified as a possible human carcinogen, Group 2B by IARC, a subsidiary/adviser of WHO. PFOA is a very stable compound and persists in the environment indefinitely.
The EPA just released an advisory for PFOA and PFAS in July 2016 setting the lifetime HA for PFOA at 0.07 ug/L (70 parts per trillion, ppt). EPA also released a PFAS action plan in 2019, but no federal enforcement yet exists to deal with the large range of PFCs in the environment and potentially in drinking water.
State limits for PFC compounds in drinking water are often lower than EPA's advisory and changing quickly as new science emerges.
Connecticut recommends a 70 ppt limit for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, PFHpA combined. New Jersey has proposed a limit of 13 ppt for PFOS (2018) and 14 ppt for PFAS (2017). Minnesota has proposed a limit of 15 ppt for PFOS (2019); 35 ppt for PFOA (2017); 47 ppt for PFHxS (2019); 2 parts per billion for PFBS (2017).
While U.S industries have voluntarily stopped use of PFOA and PFOS, the stability and hence the persistence of these compounds makes them a lifetime concern. They are present in products imported to the US and other PFCs are in production to replace them (e.g. other PFCs). They are found in water, ambient air, and occasionally indoor dust.
