Recommended by SimpleLab™ for targeted testing for hexavalent chromium in drinking water. Hexavalent chromium–also called chromium-6 or CrVI–is a form of elemental chromium in the +6 oxidation state. Trivalent chromium (CrIII) and hexavalent chromium together compose what is normally called "total chromium". Chromium may convert between the trivalent and hexavalent states in both water and the human body depending on the environmental conditions. While trivalent chromium is an essential nutrient, hexavalent chromium is a potent human carcinogen that was cast into the spotlight by Erin Brockovich.
Chromium occurs in both natural deposits, as well as in manufacturing processes such as electroplating and pigment factories. It can enter groundwater through erosion, mining waste, and industrial waste.
While hexavalent chromium is a known cancer-causing agent, there is no federal or state Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) specific to the hexavalent chromium. Instead, the national drinking water standard is set for “total chromium" 100 parts per billion (PPB). However, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment recommended a public health goal (PHG) of 0.02 PPB for hexavalent chromium in drinking water.
This Tap Score water test package provides all required materials to properly collect and submit a sample for certified laboratory testing. Reported results will include detailed, quantified analysis of hexavalent chromium by EPA 218.6 (or equivalent).
Testing includes: Hexavalent chromium.
Report analysis includes: Health-risk assessment, potential plumbing and aesthetic issues (taste, odor, appearance), comparison to any regulatory limits and/or public health guidelines, and unbiased treatment recommendations.

By default, this broad-based chemical and biological water quality screening package is designed to provide you with general information about your water for personal use. Each report includes analysis for specific numerical concentration levels of each contaminant and details about the potential sources and health effects associated with each parameter. We are not medical doctors and SimpleLab does not provide medical advice. For medical concerns always consult your doctor. As an informational water quality test, this package is not meant for state or federal compliance water testing. If you or your organization requires compliance with State or Federal Law, or compliance with a particular regulatory requirement then you must contact our support team and we will use the appropriate certified laboratory facilities to ensure your compliance testing requirements are met.
