If these tests are performed before, during, and after drilling and/or fracturing activity–they are intended to demonstrate changes in underlying water quality. Performed only afterward, they'll let you know whether your sample contains potentially harmful chemicals. There is no known fingerprint for hydraulic fracturing in drinking water. As a result, there is likely no testing kit that one can bring to court and conclusively prove cause and effect.
This Tap Score water test package provides all required materials to properly collect and submit a sample for certified laboratory testing. Reported results will include detailed, quantified analysis of all parameters tested.
Testing includes: Metals (lead, uranium, iron, arsenic etc), anions (bromide, chloride, etc), barium, conductivity, sodium, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity, minerals (magnesium, calcium etc), electrical conductivity (EC), 60+ volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene(s), methane, radioactive particles (gross alpha activity, gross beta activity).
Report analysis includes: Health-risk assessment, potential plumbing and aesthetic issues (taste, odor, appearance), comparison to any regulatory limits and/or public health guidelines, and unbiased treatment recommendations.

How were these contaminants selected?
These testing packages were selected based upon a few factors after preliminary literature review:1: likelihood of some mobility in groundwater, 2: representativeness across studies; 3: occurrence on FracFocus as tabulated in studies; and 4: potential for health concerns. Most of the contaminants in these lists have some health data but not all. We are interested in exploring contaminants that 1) have health impacts and/OR 2) have been associated with hydraulic fracturing elsewhere.
What are the limitations of testing tap water for evidence hydraulic fracturing?
There is no known fingerprint for hydraulic fracturing in drinking water. As a result, there is likely no testing kit that one can bring to court and definitively prove cause and effect. This is because: 1) There is no comprehensive list of contaminants that will capture all hydraulic fracturing contaminants, 2) Companies use proprietary mixtures based on the geology and conditions of individual wells, and 3) Many indicators of hydraulic fracturing influence in drinking water are also associated with a) naturally occurring contaminants (which the hydraulic fracturing process may release through the drilling process) and/or b) other industrial contaminants.
Water sampling includes the following general limitations:
- Water samples represent a point in time and space and without replication, do not represent exposure over time.
- Detection limits for uncommon contaminants may not be adequate to detect very low concentrations of contaminants, which may still be of health concern.
What are the following water tests able to do?
SimpleWater recommends the following tests as a good measure of changes in water quality if tests are taken before, during, and after an event related to drilling for oil or gas. Each test can tell you about the level of contaminants in your water and give an indication of overall quality. If water quality changes over a period of time based on these tests, the change can be positive (less contamination) or negative (more contamination). We recommend consultation with Simple Water on options for water treatment and perhaps more sophisticated testing if results indicate a negative change. Detection limits in certified laboratories are especially relevant to consider in cases where water is tested for trace or un-common contaminants. Identification of low concentrations of contaminants or byproducts they form en route to your well or tap may require more sophisticated testing.
